Orthodontics Q & A

What is orthodontics?

Orthodontics treats and prevents alignment issues of the teeth and jaw. It allows for a more attractive smile while lowering the risk of potentially serious health problems like cavities, gum disease, and impaction.

Many people think orthodontics is for children and teens. However, thanks to modern techniques and advances in technology, they can benefit adults as well.

What types of alignment issues can orthodontics treat?

At Momentum Dental Care, the team uses orthodontics to treat various alignment issues, including:

  • Crowding
  • Misaligned or malpositioned jaw
  • Unmatched dental midlines
  • Open bite
  • Overbite
  • Underbite
  • Gaps between teeth

You might also benefit from orthodontic treatment if you experience difficulty biting or chewing.

What are the types of orthodontics?

At Momentum Dental Care, the team offers several types of orthodontics, including:

Traditional metal braces

Traditional metal braces use rubber bands, brackets, and archwires to gradually reposition your teeth and jaw. The team applies braces during a quick outpatient procedure. Once placed, the braces put pressure on your teeth, gradually moving them into the optimal position.

If you don’t want to wear traditional braces, consider Invisalign. Invisalign is an advanced orthodontic treatment system that uses custom-crafted oral aligners to position your teeth and jaw. The aligners fit snugly over your teeth and are removable, allowing you to eat your favorite foods.

How long does treatment with orthodontics take?

The length of time that orthodontic treatment takes depends on the issues being addressed and the type of appliance used. Traditional metal braces typically take 12-18* months. Invisalign treatment takes anywhere between 6-12* months and sometimes longer.

To ensure a positive outcome, wear your orthodontics as prescribed. In addition, attend each checkup and carefully follow your provider’s instructions.

Will orthodontics benefit me?

To determine if orthodontics will benefit you, the team at Momentum Dental Care conducts an oral exam, reviews your dental health history, and asks about your goals. Then, they take a series of X-rays to assess the position of your teeth and jaw.

If the team discovers any alignment issues, they move forward with treatment. To do this, they take digital impressions of your mouth with the iTero® intraoral scanner. The team uses your impressions to develop a custom treatment plan.

After finalizing the plan, they bond metal braces to your teeth or send your scans to a dental laboratory that manufactures your Invisalign aligners. About a week later, you return to Momentum Dental Care. The team has you try on your first set of Invisalign aligners. They make adjustments as necessary and provide you with a list of care instructions.
